Money doesn’t buy happiness – but dang it, it sure helps create it. Amiright? Budgeting can be a headache for even the savviest of savers. We all work really hard for our money and although the saying “you can’t take it when you go” may be true, you also want to be smart on how you spend, even when it’s cramping your style.
We’ve all heard the saying champagne taste on a beer budget, right? Ultimately, many of us are drawn to nice things and experiences. But what if you can budget and trick yourself into believing the tightening of the purse strings isn’t painful? Here are some tips and tricks to get to the space of saving up a storm without compromising too much on the things which bring you joy.
Maybe you feel like you need Starbucks to function. No judgement here, promise! Daily fixes can add up and if you have goals of home buying or grand vacationing – tackling this expense can help you reach it that much faster. Invest in a milk steamer/froth-er and maybe even some fancy syrups. For a fraction of the cost, you can re-create those $6 cups you so enjoy sipping on the daily.
Take the time to write out the monthly things you engage in or purchase that bring you joy. Just like the example given above – seek a way to fake yourself out. Budgeting should feel soul-sucking but empowering and absolutely top-of-your game adulting, friend.
Even though you may have overdraft protection, don’t let it happen. Just don’t! there are ways to ensure you are sticking to your budget without having to constantly check your spreadsheet or organizational tool. Do things like keep a certain amount of cash specifically for the “wants” per week. When it’s gone – it’s gone. It’s a tangible way of keeping yourself on the right track with the added bonus of confusing generation z folks taking your cash for payment.
This doesn’t mean you need to have an inner picaso, don’t worry. Cut out or print items or experiences you are really passionate about acquiring or doing. When you are tempted to veer from your budget – use this as a reminder for the greater picture. Temporary things are fleeting but the memories or happiness you’ll experience when you reach your goals last a lot longer. Stay strong!
Social media has given us the ability to stay connect but can also create an unrealistic expectation of what day to day living should look like. Life may not feel like a vacation every day but with little fake outs – you can make it pretty sweet until you do get there.
