The COVID-19 pandemic is still raging, and that means social-distancing is still in full swing. To combat the feelings of isolation and keep bringing families together, we decided to keep doing Movie Nights! We kicked off our first MilHousing Movie Night of the year by featuring Aladdin. Viewers got to choose between the live action film and the animated version on Disney+.
And boy, was it one for the books! Here are some highlights from the evening:
We sent out over 200 snack boxes to families all over the world! These boxes featured some sweet and salty treats, as well as a uniquely-designed t-shirt to commemorate the evening. In addition to the delicious snacks that were sent out, Lindsey showed us how to make an amazing movie night charcuterie board and hosted a giveaway while doing so. Kayla also showed us how to make candy-dipped Oreos and Aladdin cookies, and Charlie Braden, one of our Movie Night sponsors, showed us how to make a “Royal Rebel” for adults to enjoy during the movie.
To get families in the spirit for the evening, MilHousing Network hosted a variety of games and contests prior to the movie. Families were encouraged to send in photos of both their movie setup (complete with snacks, of course!) and themselves with the hashtag #mhmmovienights. Kayla also hosted a scavenger hunt prior to the movie night, asking participants to find the meme on the Facebook page, like it, then post their favorite Aladdin GIF. Then, they were directed to the MilHousing Instagram Page, how to become a MilHousing Network Ambassador, and then they were to comment on the original post when they were done. Winners of these giveaways received various gift cards and Aladdin-themed t-shirts (different from the box, of course!). Three charms from Tiffany Gagnon were given out to three random participants who added a friend to the group prior to Movie Night.
In addition to the giveaways prior to the movie, everyone got together for some trivia during the movie! Some of the questions included – “What was the name of Jasmine’s tiger?” and “What does Abu try to steal from the Cave of Wonders?” Every correct answer earned the participants one entry for a GREAT prize!
What’s a movie night without a great costume? Kayla showed us how to make the beautiful cuffs Jasmine wears using everyday things from around the house! She showed us that with a little gold paint, some beads, and some toilet paper rolls, we, too, can look like royalty!
Overall, the number one goal of the night was to get the family together for a great movie! Families got together from all over the world to make some fun food, crafts, and play some awesome games together – all from the comfort of their couches! Be sure to “show yourself” at our next movie night – you won’t want to miss it! I’ll give you a hint – there’s a talking snowman 😉
