It is finally here everyone! FALL is finally here! Let the decorating commence and also the battle begins between wanting to buy ALL THE THINGS with not wanting to spend ALL THE MONEY. HomeGoods, Hobby Lobby and Michaels tend to be my achilles heel this time of year because as I walk the aisles everything burnt orange, yellow, leafy & even skeleton-y tries to jump into my cart. It’s the weirdest thing! 😉 I try to tell my husband that IT JUST HAPPENS but so far I don’t think he believes me. If this sounds familiar then maybe this blog can help to save you a little change as we look at fall decorating on a budget.
Here are my best money saving tips that will still leave your home feeling like an Autumn Hallmark Movie threw up everywhere, because let’s face it, that is what we are all going for.
The newest fall trend is neutral colors. I am really liking this trend because it is so easily shifted from one season to another. You can use neutrals, whites & tans easily year round and just trade out a few small pieces to show the rust and orange of fall or the green and red of Christmas or the blue and silver of Hanukkah.
Let’s start shopping in our house first before we head to the stores. Take a laundry bin and go room to room, closet to closet and snag anything neutral that could be repurposed to a new spot in your home. This is awesome because it is FREE and it is very easy to find joy in an old piece by just finding it a new place to live in your home. Think: wooden candlesticks, cozy blankets, wooden bowls, neutral fabrics and neutral candles. All of these things can be combined to make an incredible, neutral fall centerpiece that you can spruce up by spending a few dollars at a craft store to tie in some autumn colors. Example: Neutral candles and then a small piece of burlap tied around it. Or a wooden bowl moved to the center of a coffee table & filled with gourds for the season or pinecones from the yard. So many options this time of year.
I have one friend who has a chalkboard in their dining room and another who has one of those message boards where you trade out the letters…those are perfect pieces to pick up for a totally free seasonal change out. You can put an Autumn message and then trade it to a Winter poem within minutes. Just google Autumn Quotes and pick your favorite. Easy peasy and a great bang for your buck! OR what if you choose a great quote, print it out on some good paper with nice font & then throw it in a cheap frame from the dollar store!?! WINNING & Easy!
One of my favorite things to grab on the cheap are mini pumpkins. You can get a ton of them, real or fake for very little expense. Although, keep in mind, if you buy fake then you can reuse year after year and they are about the same price as the real thing but whatever floats your boat. Those tiny little fellas will spice up a centerpiece or a mantle immediately. They are also so easy to remove for the next season and replace with some holly berry sprigs or shiny festive ornament balls.
Think pine cones, fallen leaves, pretty twigs, seasonal foliage, cotton stems… all are free and make a great statement inside the house. Maybe grab some spice sticks and tie a colored ribbon around them or simply a bag of beautiful apples or some vibrant berries that you can display in a beautiful bowl to add a pop of color.
Everyone loves a good deal so check out your local thrift stores year round and snag up the good deals even if it is out of season. This year, shop those end-of-season sales, put them in a rubbermaid with a BIG LABEL that says Fall Decor and enjoy a mini-Christmas morning next year when you get to pull out all of your on-sale new treasures.
Whatever you do, don’t miss an opportunity to do something that makes you happy. Life gets heavy and we need more joy. If you love it, go for it. If a decor item makes you smile, slap that sucker up on your front door or smack dab in the middle of your table.
It’s Fall Y’all so Enjoy It All!
